Neva Masquerade, also spelled Neva Masquarade, is the name given to the colourpoint variety of the Siberian cat. This colour variation was first reported near Russia's Neva River. Its conspicuous facial mask led to the name Newskaja Maskeradnaja, which became the internationally used Neva Masquerade during the Siberian's recognition process in 1992.
FIFe recognised the Neva Masquerade as a separate sister breed of the Siberian in 2011. Its type, structure and coat are shared with the Siberian; the colourpoint pattern and blue eyes distinguish it. Classification can differ between associations. Source: FIFe.
Origins
The origin of the colourpoint factor is debated. Proposed explanations include naturally occurring traits within the population and crosses with cats such as Siamese or Birmans. Historical breeding accounts also indicate outcrossing, so an exclusively natural origin is not established.
